SAARC Summit Concluded With Addu DeclarationPosted on : Nov 18,2011
A joint commitment to fight all terror threats, transnational organized crime and illegal drugs was an important aspect of the declaration adopted by the members of the Saarc in Maldives on 11th November. As Maldives President wrapped up proceedings at this seaside tourist paradise, he read out the declaration which was like a charter of intent for member states on a range of interests from rail and road networks and reducing trade barriers. "Deeply concerned about the continuing threat of terrorism in all its forms", the Saarc nations pledged to fight "all such menaces", the statement said. It also pointed to agreements signed on rapid response to natural disasters, the Saarc seed bank and the pact on regional standards. The declaration is seen as an attempt to put some substance in the move to improve economic integration in the region and allow member nations to synergize energies on important aspects of infrastructure. The declaration said the "Safta Ministerial Council is to intensify efforts to fully and effectively implement Safta and the work on reduction in sensitive lists as well as early resolution of non-tariff barriers". It also directed the Saarc secretary general to ensure completion of preparatory work on the Indian Ocean cargo and passenger ferry service, including a feasibility study by the end of 2011, in order to launch the service.
