Afghan Ancient Citadel Qala Ikhtyaruddin Restored

Posted on : Nov 03,2011

In Afghanistan, an ancient citadel - the Qala Ikhtyaruddin in Herat province has been re-opened for the public after four years of restoration work.

This marks the beginning of a new era in reviving the glory of ancient historical monuments in a war ravaged country.

Qala Ikhtyaruddin dates back to the era of Alexander the Great and it has seen many ups and downs of Afghan history.

The Qala Ikhtyaruddin, one of the oldest structures in Herat’s historic Center, was used as a royal residence, treasury, prison and arsenal before suffering damage in numerous conflicts between the Persian, British, Afghan and Russian forces.

The restoration work was supported by the US and the German governments and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture.

The U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan Ryan Crocker, along with Governor of Herat Dr. Da’ud Saba officially opened the restored citadel to the public.

Addressing the gathering on this occasion, Ambassador Crocker noted that the restoration and revitalization of the Citadel Qala Ikhtyaruddin reflects international cooperation in the preservation of Afghanistan’s unique and important cultural heritage.
