Special Court Convicts 31 In Sardarpura Riots Case

In Gujarat, a special court has convicted 31 people out of 73 accused in one of the nine Gujarat riots cases of 2002.

The special fast-track court in Mehsana delivered the judgment on 9th Nov in Sardarpura riot case.

33 persons were killed when a violent mob burnt them alive in a locked house in a Sardarpura village in Vijapur block of Mehsana district on 1st March 2002 after the Godhra train carnage.

The charges against those convicted included murder, attempt to murder, arson, rioting, criminal conspiracy among others.The court has acquitted the other 42 accused in the Sardarpura riot case.


The quantum of sentence will be announced later. Sadarpura is one of nine Gujarat riots cases handed over to Special Investigation Team (SIT).

The Sardarpura riot case is also the first post-Godhra train carnage in which convictions have taken place.
