Gender Bias Keeps Women Away From Science A StudyPosted on : May 08,2010
The National Task force for women in science has recently realeased its findings regarding the poor participation and representation of women in field of sci-tech.Science and technology make for a demanding career and women often run into the glass ceiling. There are less than 20% of women in the faculties of research institutions and universities and less than 4% women fellows in science academies. Only a handful of them are in selection committees. We have not had a single woman Bhatnagar award winner, the region-wise distribution of women scientists varies between states. In states like Goa, Kerala, Punjab and Puducherry, the number of women enrolling in science courses at universities is well above 50%. Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and Rajasthan have abysmally low numbers. As in other fields, many women opt for a break in their career to deal with motherhood. The task force has suggested that women scientists be given greater priority in part-time and flexible jobs. It has also recommended refresher courses for women seeking re-entry into R&D careers after a break.
