ITBP To Get Modern Weapons

Home Minister P Chidambaram has said that the Government will provide modern weaponry and latest communication facilities to the Indo Tibetan Border Police Force, ITBP personnel. He said, this will help in synergising the activity between men and machine. Addressing the 50th raising day function of ITBP in New Delhi on 24TH OCT, Mr. Chidambaram said that to boost the morale of soldiers deployed in difficult terrain, the Centre recently announced high altitude allowances to ITBP personnel at par with the Army.

Director General of ITBP Ranjit Sinha said that besides border security, ITBP also provides protection to VVIPs and takes part in anti-Maoist operations.

Earlier, Home Minister P Chidambaram conferred the Police Meritorious Service Medal and Presidential Distinct Service Medal to ITBP jawans.

ITBP was set up in 1962 with four battalions to guard the Indo- China border. At present the force has 49 battalions with a total strength of over 55 thousand soldiers deployed across the country. Besides border security management, the force also plays a primary role in disaster management.
