The Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukharjee presented the Union Budget 2010-11 in parliament.the highlights of the budget are as below:
Direct Tax:
Finance Minister announced new tax rates
Income tax up to 1.6 lakh- Nill
Income tax above 1.6 lakh and up to 5 lakh - 10 percent
Income above 5 lakh & up to 8 lakh-20 per cent
Income tax above Rs 8 lakhs- 30 per cent
Unique Identification Symbol for Indian Rupee
A unique identity symbol would be provided to Indian rupee in line with US Dollar, Pound Sterlling, Euro & Yen.
Integrated action Plan
Planning Commission to prepare a integrated Action Plan for Naxal affected area.
Defence Expenditure
Rs 147,344 crore allocated for Defence expenditure in year 2010-11 against 2009-10

RURAL DEVELOPMENT
Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme
- 40100 for providing 100 days of wage employment to each rural household opting for it.
Swaranjayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana
- 2984 for establishing micro-enterprises in rural areas through activity clusters and group approach. At least 50% of the Swarozgaries will be SCs/STs, 40% women and 3% disabled. This also includes Rs.100 crore for Mahila Kisan Sashaktikaran Pariyojana, a Sub-Component of National Rural Livelihood Mission.

- 10000 for providing assistance to rural BPL households for construction of houses (and upgradation of Kutcha houses) under Indira Awaas Yojana.
Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana
- 12000 for providing connectivity to eligible unconnected rural habitations through good all-weather roads.
